Milliken Chinese Gospel church was formerly known as the Scarborough Chinese Gospel Church.
In 1978, some brothers and sisters from the downtown Chinese Gospel Chinese moved to Scarborough and noticed that there was no Chinese Christian church there. Seeing the need, they began to pray for God's guidance. Later in that year, the Deacon Board approved the idea of church planting and sent seven families to start a church in Scarborough.
They started by renting space from the Bridle Towne Park Church for prayer meetings and fellowships. When the numbers grew, they began to have Sunday services. The first Sunday service was held on April 1, 1979. The church was named Scarborough Chinese Gospel Church. At that time, the congregation was less than 40 people, with around 25 adults and 15 children.
In March 1981, the church applied to become the member of the Associated Gospel Churches of Canada (A.G.C.) and was approved on July 26.
On April 12, a thanksgiving service was held to celebrate the financial independence of the Scarborough church from the downtown church.
Initially Sunday services were conducted in Cantonese with English translation. With the growing English-speaking congregation, the first fully English language service was held on April 4, 1982.
At the General Members' meeting on April 7, 1985, the plan to purchase a piece of land at Elson Street and McCowan Road was approved as the new church building site. Since the site was located in the Milliken neighborhood, the church name was changed to "Milliken Gospel Chinese Church".
On August 11, 1991, the ground-breaking ceremony for the new church building took place.
In March 1992, construction completed and it took only six months from start to finish.
On April 5, 1992, the first Sunday Service was held at the new church building. It was also the 13th anniversary since our church was planted.
On April 26, 1992, a dedicated service for the new church building was held.
In February 2004, we had the first Mandarin-speaking service.
As the congregation continued to increase, there was a need for more space. In February 2008, the plan to build a new extension to the existing building was approved.
On July 19, 2009, the ground-breaking ceremony took place. The event happened during our church’s 30th anniversary year.
Construction of the new wing completed on January 19th, 2010. From ground-breaking to the issuance of the occupancy permit, it took only 152 days.
On April 4, 2010, a dedication service of the new extension was held.
